In Oregon, 2,240 nonprofits are at risk of losing that exemption beginning May 17
As you may know beginning May 17, many nonprofit organizations will begin to lose their tax exempt status. The Pension Protection Act of 2006 required all nonprofit organizations with revenues under $25,000 to file an eCard registration with the IRS within 3 years or lose their exempt status.
The National Center for Charitable Statistics at the Urban Institute has provided a portal to the IRS Business Master File http://nccsdataweb.urban.org/PubApps/990search.php where you can download the Oregon list. The eCard is a simple one page return that can be filled out on the site.
In Oregon 2,240 are at risk of losing that exemption beginning May 17. You might like to contact any nonprofit organizations on the list that you are aware of to inform them.
I have copied below an update from the Independent Sector to a New York Times article that provided incorrect information.
IRS Director of EO division clarifies confusion around May 17 deadline for exempt orgs not in compliance with the law
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Director of Exempt Organizations Lois Lerner May 7 took the opportunity to correct some errors in a recent New York (NY) Times article in light of the first May 17 deadline for exempt organizations who have not filed a Form 990 for three consecutive years to avoid losing their tax-exempt status. Lerner said she believes the NY Times article said 400,000 organizations were in danger of losing their exemption. “I don’t believe that is an appropriate number,” Lerner said, also highlighting the Exempt Organizations (EO) division’s extensive outreach efforts. Another error in the article reported Lerner having said the Service will not notify exempt organizations who would be losing their tax-exempt status until January to give them a chance to comply with the law. “That is not true,” said Lerner. “If you have a May filing date, you don’t have any more time to come into the IRS. You will lose your exemption” Source: BNA Daily Tax Report
