Funders Look at Advocacy Beyond Lobbying
Last Thursday’s program: Alliance for Justice, Investing in Chnage - A Funder’s Guide to Supporting Advocacy in Oregon and Southwest Washington event was the official start to the 2008 programming year. It featured a stellar presentation by Abby Levine from the Alliance for Justice and interactive panel discussion with local funders: Chris DeMars/Northwest Health Foundation, Barb Gibbs/Meyer Memorial Trust, Alissa Keny-Guyer/Penney Family Fund and State Representative Tina Kotek. The 55 participants learned how to integrate advocacy into their grantmaking by identifying lobbying activities and look beyond including it: awarding general operating grants without lobbying restrictions, acting as a convener, and making yourself available to legislators as an expert. The Alliance for Justice provided resources and information that can be found online at http://www.afj.org/for-nonprofits-foundations. Additionally, they have recently launched state specific resources for 12 states including Oregon and Washington at http://www.afj.org/for-nonprofits-foundations/state-resources.
