Conscious Collaboration: Scaling Below Market Housing Development in Clark County

North Bank Insights
Thursday, June 01, 2017
Thursday, June 1, 2017, 12:00 - 1:30 PM
DESCRIPTION:

How can nonprofits, foundations, philanthropists, and bank partners provide below market housing at the scale needed?

In March 2016, the Council for the Homeless created a wholly owned subsidiary corporation, Housing Initiative LLC , for the purpose of increasing and preserving the supply of housing affordable to those in Clark County with limited means or who have other barriers to renting in the private market. With the support and the partnership of the Community Foundation for Southwest Washington, the initiative developed a model that utilizes private sector financing strategies combined with mission driven property ownership to create mixed income developments that do not rely on traditional affordable housing financing tools. This model can be used to fill gaps in the private rental market while generating income that can be used to help the Council for the Homeless fulfill its mission.

The session will highlight the LLC model, the partnership roles and the risk tolerance to achieve creative and effective affordable housing solutions. The discussion will review the Council’s holistic approach to addressing the housing crisis, including policy and advocacy work, and special initiatives.

  • Andy Silver, Executive Director, Council for the Homeless
